Eastern Washington University partners with businesses on scholarship program

Eastern Washington University, in conjunction with The Gallatin Group and Avista Corp, is pleased to announce the first annual Congressional Intern Scholarship.

The two-thousand dollar scholarship will cover a portion of the expenses incurred by one Eastern student who is chosen to serve as an intern for either Senator Patty Murray or Senator Maria Cantwell in Washington, D.C., beginning this summer.

Mike Westfall, Eastern’s vice president for Advancement, said, “President Arévalo and I are so pleased with this generous commitment by The Gallatin Group and Avista. Philanthropy is about creating legacies. Through this gift and the potential endowment of this annual scholarship both The Gallatin Group and Avista are continuing their legacy within the Spokane and Eastern community. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students.”

Tom Paine of Avista Corp said, “At Avista, we believe in investing in our students to help them develop leadership skills and gain valuable work experience. An internship in D.C. is a priceless learning experience for our community’s future leaders.”

Jeffrey Bell, of The Gallatin Group added, “Internships in Washington, D.C., are usually unpaid, which makes it financially impossible for many students to participate. This scholarship provides funds for selected students who normally couldn’t afford an internship, allowing them to experience the inner workings of our nation’s government first hand.”

The deadline for applying for this scholarship is March 2, 2007. Information packets and applications are available at the EWU scholarship office, 102 Sutton Hall, on the Cheney campus. Prospective applicants may also call 359-2314 or go to the website http://www.ewu.edu/x2319.xml for more information.
