SITUATION
Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon was outgrowing its existing campus and needed to physically expand while also strengthening its leadership role in the creativity economy of the city, state and region.
STRATEGY
Help PNCA secure, at no cost, a federal surplus property – the 511 Broadway Building – in downtown Portland that it could renovate for future expansion. Build a broad coalition of local arts, creative economy, business and political leaders to fend-off competing proposals and voice support for the PNCA property acquisition application to the federal government. Position the proposal as a catalyst for job creation and real-estate revitalization.
OUTCOME
The PNCA application was accepted by the federal government and the institution is in the planning and fundraising stages to take possession and begin renovation of the building.
