SITUATION
Ridgeline Energy is a wind energy developer with multiple wind projects in Idaho, Wyoming, Washington and other western states. Highly visible opposition to a project in southeastern Idaho caught the company off-guard. At a hearing for a county permit, vocal, well-organized and well-funded opponents appeared. There was an immediate need to effectively disseminate accurate information about project benefits and push back on inaccurate statements the opposition was making.
STRATEGY
Our initial research into community views revealed that opposition to the project was attracting substantial media attention but did not run deep. We implemented a series of public outreach tactics including media interviews, outreach to community leaders and groups, and a public forum to disseminate accurate information about the project. We also engaged project landowners and local advocacy groups to enlist their support in explaining project benefits.
OUTCOME
Upon understanding the local benefits of the project, public opinion swung sharply in Ridgeline’s favor. The broad base of public support resulted in approval of the use permit by the Planning and Zoning Commission and unanimous support for the permit by the County Commission on appeal.
“Ridgeline Energy had an immediate need to disseminate accurate information about project benefits and defuse exaggerated statements from the opposition. On short notice, Gallatin prepared and implemented a comprehensive plan that mobilized our support base and successfully got Ridgeline’s message across. Ridgeline is extremely pleased with the results and strongly recommends Gallatin Public Affairs.”
